Artist Biography

Andrea Castro is a 17-year-old artist from Los Angeles, California, and a senior at Santa Monica High School. She has been drawing, painting, and using any and all arts and crafts to share her unique perspective since she could hold a pencil. Andrea’s interest in marine and environmental conservation is somewhat recent, but her newly sparked passion inspired her to create this artwork to raise awareness about the importance of environmental stewardship. Through her hand drawn rendering Andrea was able to illustrate the widespread rippling effect of the impact an individual’s actions and the beautify that comes from working together to protect the watershed. “That impact can even create a chain reaction around communities, it is not as hard as some people may think to be more eco-friendly” shares Andrea.

“Growing up in Los Angeles there is so much advertising for different brands and big flashy commercials but the only thing that has really caught my attention as an artist and Angeleno are the murals on the sides of the buildings, the creative stickers plastered everywhere, and even graffiti, the art of the people inspires me.” Andrea brought that same passion to her own hand-drawn interpretation of the Heal the Bay 2023 Coastal Cleanup Day theme, “making an impact from Summit to Sea”.

Andrea believes that sending messages through art or images is much more impactful than lots of words crowding an advertisement. Heal the Bay was honored to name her as our 2023 Summit to Sea Artist and to have her artwork as the showcase illustration in our 2023 Coastal Cleanup Day Poster to inspire thousands of volunteers to make waves of change together.

We’re Cleaning From Summit to Sea in 2023:

A Day of Action

Join us for our 34th annual community cleanup happening at more than 55 sites across Los Angeles County!  Our planet’s waters and marine life are suffering from the cumulative impact of an unprecedented amount of pollution, climate change, and harmful human activity. This year, we invite you to participate in our day of action to drastically rehabilitate our local environment. Choose a cleanup location and join in on fun site activities, giveaways, and more!

Our 2023 Theme

Heal the Bay’s Coastal Cleanup Day 2023 theme is all about using our self-expression, local knowledge, and collective strength to make an impact, not just on the beach, but throughout our watershed, from the highest summits of the Santa Monica Mountains to the seas far beyond the Channel Islands. While this past deluge of winter rain has brought relief to our parched region after years of drought, it also brings concern for water quality as rain water makes its way through the city bringing pollutants and trash to our waterways and beaches. Healthy rivers and coasts are the keys to a healthy planet from summit to sea. This year we are focusing on helping volunteers create cleanup sites wherever “healers” see the need, not just on the shore. Trash from inland areas flows downstream to the coast, so cleaning up neighborhood trash prevents marine debris.

Does your favorite hiking trail look like it could use a cleanup? Is the area around your neighborhood school in need of some care? What about your favorite swimming spot?

On Coastal Cleanup Day, thousands of people unite to keep our ecosystems thriving while deepening our sense of reciprocity for safe, healthy, and clean water. We invite you to make an impact wherever you are.
