Within the Santa Monica Bay, there are four main types of habitat: Rocky Shore, Sandy Bottom and Shore, Kelp Forest, and Open Ocean. Each of these habitats supports a diverse ecosystem of plants and animals, and is an important part of the overall health of the Bay.
SM Bay at Sunset History
In the big picture, Los Angeles is a very young city. In the 1700’s, most of LA was open space grassland and oak trees. The Los Angeles River and hundreds of other rivers and streams made their way through the grasslands into the open and pristine ocean.

The area surrounding the Santa Monica Bay is one of the world’s most populous urban areas—1.9 million people live in the Santa Monica Bay watershed. We have 22 public beaches, 22 miles of bike path, and 55 miles of shoreline. The Santa Monica Bay has long supported a large fishing population—mostly sport and sustenance fishing but also some commercial fishing as well.
