Celebrated since 1970, Earth Day and Earth Month continue to be the most popular time to raise our environmental awareness and celebrate our connection to world around us.

This year, Heal the Bay’s Earth Month events focus on marine debris — and since 86% of that debris is plastic, the solution starts with us.

Over 35 years ago, April 22nd was designated as Earth Day. Since then, annual Earth Day events around the world have celebrated and renewed our connection with the planet and reminded us all how to be good stewards of our Mother Earth.

At Heal the Bay, we take this notion of one day to celebrate the planet and expand it to Earth Month — a series of events throughout April that provides the public the opportunity to preserve and improve our global home and, in particular, the amazing resources of Southern California's coastal waters, rivers and creeks.

So take a moment this April to celebrate the wonder of life on our planet and to do your part by joining us for one of our Earth Month events. You’ll be glad you did…and so will the Earth!

Earth Month Events

April 19 — “Nothin' But Sand” Beach Cleanup
Join us April 19th in Redondo Beach from 10:00am - noon where our Nothin’ but Sand crew will lead this beach cleanup. Volunteers can park using the metered lot at the end of Pearl Street and Esplanade (bring quarters!) or in the Redondo Beach Pier parking structure at 100 W. Torrance Blvd., where Torrance Blvd. meets the sea ($5 all day parking). Meet at the cleanup site which will be on the sand just south of the pier near the Ainsworth lifeguard tower. See the "Cleanup Information" sidebar at right for waiver forms and information about safety, what to wear, and how to clean a beach.

April 19 — Splash! Festival
Join Heal the Bay and the Fowler Museum at the Splash! Festival on Saturday, April 19th from 11:30-3:30 on UCLA’s campus celebrating the opening of the museum's new exhibit called Mami Wata, Pidgen-English for “Mother Water”. The festival will have dance troupes, arts and crafts, and plenty of other family activities. Don’t miss the live performances by Viver Brasil Dance Company and Congo-inspired group Balobi Bandeko. There will even be a costume contest and procession — come dressed as your favorite mermaid!

April 20 — Green Apple Earth Day Festival
On Sunday April 20th we are partnering with Green Apple Earth Day Festival on the Santa Monica Pier. Join us from noon to 6pm for a day of education and music. Currently, Taj Mahal and Ziggy Marley are on the schedule. Bring the whole family. Free admission! Visit Greenapplemusicfestival.com for the latest line up.

April 26-27 — Earth Weekend at the Aquarium
Heal the Bay wraps up Earth Month with our special Earth Weekend at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium on April 26 & 27th from 11am-6pm. Fun, educational activities are planned for the whole family including ocean pollution workshops, arts and crafts, face painting and more! Clean the beach and get in free!

April 26 — Compton Creek Cleanup
Talk about bang for your volunteer buck - at this cleanup, you'll collect at least five bags of trash on your own-guaranteed. This is probably one of the most neglected watersheds in L.A. We need your help to get it back in shape.
