Heal the Bay's K-5 marine education
program wraps up the school year with
a new Workshop III and an
additional date in May for Workshops I and II.
Key
to the Sea continues its tradition of providing
free ground-breaking marine education
with the introduction of the new Workshop
III. Created
for veteran Key
to the Sea teachers who have
completed Workshops I and II, Workshop III
provides a logical third-year continuation
of
Professional Development training.
Workshop
III is a "make and take" workshop,
designed to raise
awareness of and decrease the impact
of
humans
on the ocean environment.
Topics include:
the Clean Water Act, fish contamination,
seafood watch, habitat loss, sewer and
wastewater treatment, and storm drains.
With
each topic, participants "make" a
teaching tool to "take" back
to the classroom.
The
first Workshop III will be held May 15 at
the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium. All veteran
Key to the Sea teachers are invited to participate
in this new, exciting (and free) workshop!
Seating is limited
and early registration is recommended. (Year
3-Workshop III)
Also,
for Workshop I and II teachers there is still
time to signup and participate in the Key
to the Sea program. There are two remaining
workshop dates for this school year - April
10th at the SEA Lab in Redondo Beach and
the newly added May 22nd at the Manhattan
Beach Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium.
Again, these are the last two workshops for
this school year so signup fast! (Year
1-Workshop I, Year 2-Workshop
II).
Wrapping
up its fifth year, the Key to the Sea
program was established by
Heal the Bay in 1999 in response to requests
from Los Angeles County marine science centers
and teachers for assistance in expanding
their environmental education programs. During
the 2002-2003 school year, approximately
9,500 students and 350 teachers participated
in Key to the Sea Programs. Reaction from
teachers and students has been overwhelmingly
enthusiastic!
