Coastal
Cleanup Day 2003 (CCD 2003) was held on Saturday,
September 20, with Los Angeles bringing out more
volunteers than any other county in California-over
9,000 participants! (Orange County was the runner-up
with about 4,700 volunteers.) Coastal
Cleanup Day is an international event,
with the distinction of being the largest volunteer
day on the planet.
All
across Los
Angeles County, people from all
walks of life-including
schools, businesses, government agencies and
community groups-pulled together to rid our
local waterways of unsightly trash. Volunteers
picked
up 60,126
pounds of trash and 2,866 pounds of recyclables
from 57 beach and river sites. Check out the
Coastal Cleanup Day Photo
Album to
get a glimpse of the day's
activities in Los Angeles County.
Highlights
of this year's Coastal Cleanup Day include:
• A
new inland cleanup site near Elysian Park removed
1,432 pounds of trash from the L.A. River.
• Swatch brought Olympic medalists Carl Lewis and Janet Evans, and actress
Shannon Elizabeth to help out at the Redondo Beach
cleanup.
• The Marina del Rey kayak cleanup was
revived this year with the help of Santa Monica BayKeeper.
• The Pacific American Volunteer Association, based in Koreatown, brought
out an incredible 700 volunteers to Santa Monica Beach.
• Nearly 1,000 school children
received free buses for a day of volunteering, education and fun.
• Culver City
sent street sweepers into Ballona Creek to help remove trash that could not
be reached by volunteers.
• Sections of Malibu Creek and the Ballona Wetlands were
cleaned up and then restored with native plants.
Heal the Bay wishes to thank the many volunteers
who help make Coastal Cleanup Day successful
year after year-proving that one person
CAN make a difference! Everyone from beach
captains to office helpers were essential
in making this incredible event possible.
We would also like to extend a special
thanks to the cities, agencies, businesses,
and radio and TV stations who sponsored
this event by generously donating funds,
time and in-kind services. Their contributions
helped make the day a huge success.
