Cyclists: Come help Mountains Restoration Trust and Heal the Bay save critical riparian habitat in the Malibu Creek watershed from invasive weeds.
There are sites in Malibu Creek State Park that need work but are too far to reach by hiking. We're seeking up to 20 hardy folks with mountain bikes (or anything you can ride on a fire road) to help restore habitat.
The restoration site is at the back of the park and only about 3 miles each way, so you don't need to be Lance Armstrong.
Bring your bike, your helmet, and basic off-road riding skills in addition to: Sturdy shoes to work in (if your cycling shoes aren't appropriate), plenty of water and a snack, a hat, sunscreen, pump and patch kit just in case. Be prepared to get dirty. Gloves and tools will be provided. The organizer and volunteers will leave for the work site promptly at 9 a.m., the ride should take about 15 minutes.
NOTE: Request a parking pass for the Heal the Bay/Mountains Restoration Trust restoration event at the front gate. We'll meet at the upper parking lot near the picnic tables and restrooms at 8:45 a.m. If you are coming south on Las Virgenes Rd., the park entrance is 0.2 miles south of Mulholland. If you are coming morth on Malibu Canyon Rd, the park entrance is 1.5 miles north of the crossing with Piuma. There is another entrance for Malibu Creek SP/Tapia south of the main entrance, 0.2 miles north of Piuma -- do not enter here but continue on another 1.3 miles to the main entrance.
All participants must sign liability waiver forms (PDF download).
The event is open to anyone 16 and over, as long as they are comfortable biking off-road. Those under 18 must have their waiver form signed by a parent or guardian to participate.
Space is limited and volunteers will be registered on a first come/first served basis - sign up now.
