The habitat restoration in Leo Carrillo State Park is part of a larger project to restore the creek, Arroyo Sequit, for the endangered Southern California steelhead trout. The project involves removing barriers so that steelhead can migrate upstream, removal of invasive plants, and planting of natives to restore the riparian habitat. Invasive plants have negative impacts on natural habitats, so removing them is vital for a healthy watershed.
Enjoy the fresh air and sunshine while helping remove non-native vegetation along Arroyo Sequit in Leo Carrillo State Park. Volunteers will work to remove invasive Cape Ivy from areas along the creek, which is poisonous to fish and other aquatic life. Arroyo Sequit empties into the Pacific, so you know what that means... the beach! After you help restore the creek, go enjoy all the shoreline has to offer. Explore the tidepools, have a picnic, or just hang out, you'll have earned it.
Please wear sturdy shoes. Long pants and a long-sleeved work shirt are strongly recommended. Bring plenty of water and a snack and a sunscreen/hat. Be prepared to get dirty. Gloves and tools will be provided. In the unlikely event of heavy rain, the restoration will be cancelled and you can sign up for a restoration event scheduled for a later date. We will notify you by email in the event of a cancellation.
