Worldwide seafood consumption is higher than ever, riding a wave of research and popular press showing relative health benefits of fish compared to beef, pork and poultry. Estimates indicate that total United States fish consumption is second only to China's. Yet, the U.S. seafood trade deficit is over $11 billion. Seafood production occurs primarily in developing countries with minimal environmental and social regulations, while capture fisheries are facing pressure.

Celebrate the Annual Migration of the Gray Whale
Whale of a Weekend highlights the annual migration of the Pacific gray whale, which completes one of the longest migrations of any species, traveling 10,000 to 14,000 miles round trip between the arctic seas and the warm lagoons of Baja California, Mexico. This migration takes the whales past the Santa Monica Pier - sometimes within viewing distance from the west end observation deck.
For November's FREE eco movie night, Transition Mar Vista/Venice screens Thea Mercouffer's acclaimed documentary Rock the Boat. The audacious feat of George Wolfe and his fellow paddlers is now inspiring urban river restoration and revitilization. With Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti just back from Washington D.C. to garner support for L.A.
What: The opening of Women Make the World Go Round 2.0, a mixed media art exhibition at the Broadway Art Space (formerly known as WIP Flash). The VIP portion of the evening is just for Heal the Bay members, where guests will enjoy a wine tasting and time spent with the artists whose art is being featured.
