This is the inaugural year of the OptimisSport Distance Swim Challenge, an open-water endurance swim competition being held in the Santa Monica Bay on October 16, 2010. The competition has been designed to promote active and healthy lifestyles and to raise awareness about protecting water quality in our oceans.
All net proceeds from this event will go to Heal the Bay and other local charities that promote a healthy and active lifestyle, whether teaching us to take better care of our environment or to take better care of our bodies.
About the Event The OptimisSport Distance Swim Challenge will test the limits of some of the world's most highly-skilled endurance athletes—a 12.6-mile swim between Manhattan Beach and the Santa Monica Pier.
For those not ready to conquer the full 12.6 miles, there will be competitions in three other distances: 4.8-miles, 2.4-miles, and 1.2-miles. Teams will be able to compete in an 8-person 12.6-mile relay or a 4-person 4.8-mile relay.
