Overall Results
The overall water quality at California beaches this past summer was very good. Of the 436 monitoring locations throughout California, 383 locations (87.6%) received very good-to-excellent water quality marks (344 As and 39 Bs). There were 53 locations (12.4%) that received fair-to-poor water quality marks (25 Cs, 15 Ds and 13 Fs). Overall, California’s summer beach water quality grades were similar to the summers of 2003 and 2002.

This is the first California Summer Beach Report Card to include water quality information for San Francisco County. Although water quality monitoring programs exist in Del Norte, Mendocino, and Marin, Heal the Bay was not able to obtain their data for this analysis. Heal the Bay plans to include their water quality monitoring information by spring 2005.

For overall and county-by-county grade statistics, please see the California Grade Summary page. For county grades, please see the County Analyses page.
