The County of San Luis Obispo Environmental Health Department consistently monitored 20 locations this year, from as far upcoast as Pico Avenue in San Simeon to a downcoast location at Pismo State Beach in Oceano. Most samples are collected 25 yards north or south of the mouth of a stormdrain or creek.

All dry weather water quality in San Luis Obispo County was excellent again. Ninety-five percent of the monitoring locations received A grades (Figures 24 and 25) for both the AB411 time period and year-round dry weather. Pismo Beach Pier continued its trend of decreasing water quality by scoring a D for AB411 and a C for year-round dry weather.
Wet weather water quality in San Luis Obispo County was well above the state average. Only 4 of the 20 (20%) locations monitored received fair-to-poor grades compared to 35% in 2005–2006. This is most likely due to the dramatic lack of rain in California (especially in the central and southern parts of the state) this past winter. For example, the CAPS rain station in Pismo Beach recorded less than half the amount of rain from the previous year (14.7” for 05-06 and 6.93” for 06-07).
