The
County of San Luis Obispo, Environmental Health Department
monitored 18 locations on a weekly basis yearround,
from as far upcoast as Cayucos State Beach in
Cayucos to a downcoast location at Pismo State Beach in
Oceano. Most samples are collected 25 yards north or
south of the mouth of a storm drain or creek. For additional

Dry
weather water quality at all but one beach in San
Luis Obispo County was excellent. Of the 18 water
quality monitoring locations, 94% (see Table 13 and Table
14) of the locations received As. The lone exception
was Pismo Beach Pier-southside of the pier, which
received a D. Potential sources of pollution may
be the
large roosting bird population, dogs on the beach, or activities on the pier.
Wet
weather water quality at beaches in San Luis Obispo
County was generally good. 72% of beaches scored
an A or B. Avila and Pismo beaches had the county's
worst wet weather ocean
water quality.
Clean
Beach Initiative Summary
The City of Pismo Beach received a $1.2 million CBI
grant to replace an aged and inadequate sewage pump
station at Addie Street to better handle flows during
wet weather events, and reduce
the number of potential sewer overflows into Pismo Creek.
Sewage
Spill Summary
For the third year in a row, there were zero (0) reported
sewage spills that led to beach closures in San Luis
Obispo County.
