The
County of Monterey, Environmental Health Agency monitored
eight locations on a weekly basis from April
through October, from as far upcoast as the Monterey
Beach Hotel at Roberts Lake in Seaside to a downcoast
location of Carmel City Beach in Carmel by the Sea. From
November to March, the County monitors these locations
on a monthly basis. For additional water quality information
visit the Monterey County
Environmental Health Agency website.
During
the AB411 time period, water quality at most beaches
in Monterey County was excellent. Of the eight
monitoring locations, seven locations, or 88%, received As.
For the third year in a row, Stillwater Cove at the Beach and
Tennis Club scored markedly worse than all other monitored Monterey County beaches.
It received an F grade. Last year, Monterey County
was awarded a CBI grant but
chose not to accept the funds due to their own budgetary
constraints. Therefore, Monterey County is not using CBI
funds, though they were offered, to remediate the problem.
Stillwater Cove, as its name implies, has poor circulation
and little tidal flushing. In addition, this location tends to
be a favorite of marine mammals and byirds. The only other
known source in the area is a constantly running storm
drain, which mostly services the local golf course.
With
Monterey County only monitoring weekly from April
through October, there was insufficient wet weather
data for analysis.
Sewage
Spill Summary
There were four reported sewage spills in Monterey
County that led to beach closures this past year, discharging
a total of 11,030 gallons. A spill at Seal Rock Beach in
Pebble Beach accounted for 91% of the total volume discharged.
The other three locations were Pacific Grove (7th
and Oceanview), Maccabee Beach, and Lover's Point Beach.
