Mendocino
County monitored six locations last year, from Mackerricher
Beach State Park at Mill Creek to Navarro River Beach
at Navarro
Beach Road. The Environmental Health Department
monitors sampling locations on a weekly basis from April through October. During
the winter season there was reduced monitoring or
no monitoring at all. These monitoring programs are
being
funded by the Environmental Protection Agency's National Beach Guidance and Performance
Criteria for Recreational Waters (EPA BEACH). Mendocino will reduce their monitoring
program, from six locations to three, due to budget cuts in the EPA BEACH budget
for these programs. The three remaining locations are: Mackerricher Beach State
Park at Virgin Creek, Big River near Pacific Coast Highway, and Van Damme State
Park at the Little River.
Overall,
dry weather water quality from April through October
was excellent. All six water quality monitoring locations
covered by the Beach Report Card received As. In
March and April last year, Mackerricher Beach State
Park at Virgin Creek experienced a few water quality
exceedances. This has led the County to conduct additional
monitoring in the upstream portions of this watershed
for the coming year to determine if any potential
sources can be identified.

Spill Summary
