SUMMER CLASS DATES
6/13 - Sharks! From the basics to little-known facts, students will learn everything they've ever wanted to know about one of the ocean's most intriguing animals, sharks. Through observations of pictures, artifacts and live sharks, students will familiarize themselves with eleven different shark species (some of them found in our very own Aquarium) and their appearance, diet and behavior.
8/8 - Fishy Fossils Students will learn what exactly a fossil is, how they are formed and how they can help scientists discover new things about old animals. We will take the students back in time to learn about a variety of extinct ocean-dwelling species, from the Dunkleosteuses to the Icthyosaurs. From creating fun fossil imprints and rubbings, to digging for real fossilized shark teeth, students unearth all sorts of interesting facts about the sea animals of the past and the remains that are found today.
8/15 - The Deep Sea Imagine living in a world without light in near-freezing temperatures. A world where the pressure can be more than 20 times greater than it is on land! During this class, the Micro Biologists will learn about the weird, wacky and fierce creatures that live in the darkness.
8/29 - Beach Day An all-time favorite! While exploring the Santa Monica Pier Beach, kids can learn the answers to all the beach questions they've ever wondered about: What makes those tiny holes in the sand? Why do some birds have short legs and some birds have long legs? How do mussel shells end up on the shore? Kids also learn an important lesson about the dangers of littering (storm drains), and the importance of recycling in order to protect marine plants and animals.
